Ethical Brand Ratings- Good on You

‘Good On You’ is an app that can be downloaded onto any device on either iOS or Android which rates brands based on their impact on people, the planet and animals.

What is it?

The Good On You ethical brand rating system gives the user the power to make better choices as an informed shopper.

The app also has a section under ‘home’ which further educates the shopper on how to be more sustainable.

Everything they do contributes to the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goal 12: ‘Ensure sustainable production and consumption patterns’ (United Nations, 2019).

How they rate each brand

The rating system is divided into three categories: people, planet and animals

People: Good on You look at a brands' impact on the workers across the supply chain, these include; practices on child labour, forced labour, worker safety, payment of living wage and many more policies.

Planet: they examine the brand’s resource use and disposal, energy use, carbon emissions, impacts on water, as well as chemical use and disposal.

Animals: they spot if the brands use fur, down feather, shearling, karakul and any exotic animal skin or hair. They also identify the use of wool including ‘mulesing’ as well as the use of leather and how they use it.

How they source the information

The most reliable piece of information that Good on You uses comes from certification schemes such as Fair Trade, OEKO-TEX and Global Organic Textile Standards, but to contribute towards the information they also look at other independent rating projects.

However, some brands don’t have full transparency and only a small minority offer certified products, creating a cause for further examination into the standard systems brands may choose to follow.

The rating system itself

‘Good On You’ has a 1-5 rating system. One being that these brands provide little to no concrete information on the impact on people, planet and animals, so they recommend on trying to avoid purchasing from these brands. Whilst five being that a brand has scored highly in at least two of the proposed categories and have one or more certifications or accreditations.
