The Bridgerton Effect

During a time of where we are encouraged to spend more time on the sofa and in our loungewear, it doesn’t come as a surprise that television shows are impacting our wardrobes more than usual. Bridgerton, the steamy new Netflix period drama is no exception to this. Netflix has shared that 82 million households watched the series in the first 28 days.

Bridgerton set between 1813 and 1827 which is also called the Regency Era, was inspired by the historical romance novel series written by Julia Quinn. Shonda Rhimes the producer of the show questions the idea of power, gender stereotypes and depictions of race.

Costume designer Ellen Mirojnick and a team of 230 others created 7,500 costume pieces for the show, designing everything from corsets, fascinators and jewellery.

Floral embellishments were a constant element of the costumes, especially among the Featherington family who had the detail incorporated into their brightly coloured dresses and headpieces.

The immense popularity of the show has caused influence on Spring 2021 fashion trends. According to Lyst’s new report, in the weeks following Bridgerton’s release, searches for period pieces like corsets, headpieces, elbow-length gloves, and more have skyrocketed. There has also been a reported surge of searches for regency-style jewellery and antique furniture.

Not only is the show inspiring us, but it is also already proven to be a key trend from the Spring 2021 ready-to-wear collections. With many designers and brands creating romantic, feminine gowns fit for many ladies of ‘Bridgerton’.

At Dior, creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri created a Spring couture collection inspired by a 15th century tarot deck for the Duke of Milan. Although the Duke of Milan may not have any connection to the Duke of Hastings in ‘Bridgerton’, the collection does include many pieces that resemble the costumes in the show.
