Why Shein is cancelled / Welcome to the dark mistakes of Shein

Shein describes itself as “an international B2C fast fashion e-commerce platform.” Their

mission statement is to provide “on-trend styles catering both young women and teens”

that won’t break the bank. They ship to over 220 countries and regions worldwide by

shipping from one of its many globally positioned warehouses.


Shein has developed into a global fast-fashion site where their main focus is on producing

vast amounts of cheap clothing at high speeds.


Shein is facing backlash after two major mistakes they made this summer (2020). The first one was at in the beginning of July, when customers noticed that Shein was selling decorative rugs

which resembled Muslim prayer rugs. Many people took to social media to share the images

of the rug while accusing the brand of cultural appropriation and demanding for the items to be removed. Muslim activists also demanded that the rugs are removed from their website. Shein apologised on their Instagram and said that they have now formed a “product review committee with staff from different cultures and religions so a mistake like this doesn’t happen again”.


A week later an Instagram account called @hereforthetea2 discovered a necklace on their website a “Metal Swastika Pendant Necklace”, which resembled the symbol that the Nazi Party used. This discovery quickly led to more backlash causing Shein to apologise and explain that it was a “Buddhist Swastika” meant for culture appreciation. They said, yet again, that they have made “a gigantic mistake” and quickly removed the item.


Because of these negative situations customers are boycotting Shein and encouraging others to be aware and sensitive to religions and cultures.
